In Fall 2023, Mayor Eric Adams opened the "Get Sheds Down" initiative to improve rules governing sidewalk construction sheds, and reduce the number of scaffoldings on public sidewalks in New York City.

The initiative includes multiple strategies to quickly take down construction sheds, including increased penalties for unrepaired facade violations and extended shed permins, expanding the use of safety netting, and changes to facade inspection protocols.
